Memories of Church

As a child, Church (C of E), prior to worship starting, was as quiet as a mouse. This was in the 1930s and 40s. No one spoke much, and if they did, it was in whispers. There was a deep sense of what I now know is called 'Reverence' - God was there.

Times have changed haven't they? So much so that nowadays we cannot even hear the organist playing. Is there no time in todays world and church for reverence?

May I refer to the book of Ecclesiasticus, chapter 32, commencing at verse 3, which was written about 142-163BC. (Slightly modified).

Do not disturb the musicians
Where there is music do not pour out speech
And do not be importunate in showing thy wisdom
Like a ruby shines in its golden setting
So is the musicians ensemble at a banquet
Listen in silence
And thy modesty will be rewarded by goodwill.

Why don't we try to save all the talking until morning worship has ended? I don't mean we should sit in silence with long faces!

Am I the only one who thinks we should be reasonably quiet prior to the service starting?

Lets have other views.
